My Prayer to Receive Jesus

Visitation can be particularly difficult for our moms, especially when they are escaping domestic violence. The moms often fear, and rightfully so, that their abuser will lose control and harm their children. We have seen instances where the father has been granted visitation and the mom fears for her children’s safety, so she chooses to go back to her abusive relationship so she can be there to protect them from harm. A devastating decision, but one that can easily be understood.

One of our residents had been going through a particularly difficult time because her abuser was granted overnight visitation with her son every other weekend. Not only is this mom fearful that her son will be mistreated, but he has been coming home with ugly words towards her. One evening, this mom came and told me her son had something to tell me. He shared with me that his father had been speaking poorly about his mom. I sat down next to this child and we had a conversation about things he could do to protect himself in uncomfortable situations like that. We talked about Jesus and how much he loves him. I assured him that God was with him and that he could always pray when he is scared and God will help him. I also told him he could pray for his mommy and daddy.

While I was talking to this boy, his mom was pulling bedtime books off the library shelves to read to him that night. After about 45 minutes, she came into my office in tears. She handed me a piece of paper and I glanced at it like “what is this?” Then I read the title – ‘My Prayer to Receive Jesus’. One of the books she had taken off the bookshelf was a storybook about the life of Jesus and had a prayer sheet in the back of the book. That night, her 7-year-old boy had accepted Christ into his life as Lord and Savior!

The struggle in visitation has not gone away, but the crippling fear for her child’s safety has diminished. This mom has the assurance that her son will be with her eternally in heaven one day, and that is all the assurance she needs. Praise the Lord!

Welcome Marie

We are pleased to introduce Marie Sackett as the newest Board Member of the Sheepfold. In addition to her 25 years in tax and investment services, Marie brings experience from working with non-profit organizations.

One of her favorite programs is, the Sheepfold’s “Adopt a Family Program”, which she has participated in for several years. Her favorite pastime is hiking with her husband, Mike, and their therapy dog, Grace.

Marie is thrilled to join the Sheepfold Board as it allows her to personally apply the scripture 1 John 3:17 which states "but whoever has the material possessions of this world and sees his brother in need and yet refuses to show him compassion, in what way does the love of God remain in him?"

Marie looks forward to contributing to the work of the Sheepfold.

Fun Garden Day

Volunteers, Gwen and Karen, enjoyed making succulent center pieces with our moms for Mother’s Day.

They taught our moms how to make inexpensive centerpieces with items from the dollar store and succulent plants that came from Karen’s garden.

The moms were so excited to display these beautiful plants in their bedrooms.

Thank you Gwen and Karen!
